ChakrasIn Vedic tradition, the seven chakras (variously translated as "nerve centers" or "energy centers," neither of which is exactly right) are a hierarchy of locations in the human body, running up the center line of the torso and head. While only some of these locations correspond more than approximately with physical organs (especially since the body is not as symmetrical on the inside as it looks from the outside, and the actual trunk of nerves we call the spinal cord runs up the back rather than the front), they are nonetheless useful foci in various schemas of meditation and pathworking. Each chakra has its corresponding mantra (traditional chant) and yantra (traditional symbol). In these paintings, I have used the traditional yantra of each chakra as a jumping-off point. All items listed here are gouache on illustration board unless otherwise noted. Please click on the thumbnail pictures to see a larger view. Chakra Series I (2004) is my first approach to the entire sequence of chakras as an integral whole. In this series, I have not done as much cross-cultural synthesis, instead using the traditional Sanskrit characters and traditional colors to create designs readable to the Western eye.
